When leaves fall,
still shouting life with
their last rasping breath,
as brilliant reds, yellows and umber

I enjoyed the lovely poetry in When Leaves Fall by Elise Skidmore. The author has a gift for capturing snapshots of real life.The emotion in the poetry makes it come alive as in the first poem: "When leaves fall, still shouting life with their last rasping breath..."
The poems are insightful as in The River of Time: "We are trapped in its flow: the people we once were are the people we are now and the people we will be."
Whaddaya Want? is a fun piece that paints New York as only a person who knows and loves New York can show it.
A number of the poems beautifully portray relationships. I especially loved the wording in the poem, Not Fade Away: "You linger along the fringes of my heart, waiting for some random thing to pull you into the spotlight."
Some of the poems capture a moment in time. You Gotta Believe is written from a Mets fan's perspective when the Mets beat the Braves in 1969.
A variety of topics are touched on throughout the book. Through a Microscope gives an interesting perspective on man's place in the universe. The poem, Dear Norman is a tribute to Norman Rockwell. My sentiments were expressed in the words..."I'd like to pull back the paint and step into their world." And the poem, Miracles Happen is packed with powerful words in a just a few lines.
Finally, I loved the original imagery in so many of the poems. Some of my favorites were: Desperation Shouts, Insomnia, Sunrise at 10,000 Ft., Winter Crepuscule, and Island Fantasy. All beautifully written.
I really enjoyed this book. The poetry is so real. It drew me into the emotion behind the words, allowing me to glimpse and connect into real life moments. Whether a person reads poetry or prose, I believe he or she will find When Leaves Fall by Elise Skidmore a pleasure to read.

These poems bring us words to savor. They are accessible words with multiple levels of meaning. Read the poems once for pure pleasure. Read them again to find their secrets of memories, families, time, trees, smiles, food and all the things in Autumn that resonate with our lives. "I breathe deep," the poet writes in the book's first poem. This sets the stage for all that follows because the words and themes here are those we need to inhale to appreciate fully.
Warm and accessible, Ms Skidmore's poetry shines. Her love of the simple things, of home and family, evokes memories and feelings common to us all, and her sure hand strokes the iron string that runs through every heart. Kudos.
Poet Elise Skidmore sees the mundane and the special, the everyday images we take for granted and the darker, sadder realities of our lives, and gives them the importance they deserve in her eloquent, descriptive free verse style. Each word is chosen carefully, as much for its own sound and meaning as for the image created and the power and emotion delivered when teamed with other well-chosen words. Whether honoring the memory of a loved one gone or in displaying a wry and cocky pride in her hometown, the result is a body of spectacular images and an experience that warms, elivens and satisfies.
Elise Skidmore writes of her father, of loss, of love, of the seasons. She writes of sadness and New York and lost innocence. And then she writes about the Amazin' Mets of 1969. Really? The Mets? Elise, you won. You touched my heart. "Today" brought a tear to my eye. "Ever Your Child" spoke of a poignant longing. And "My Father Was Still a Boy" is an amazing tribute. Beautifully illustrated, When Leaves Fall is an all encompassing compilation of emotion.

First let me begin with I am not a lover of poetry, but having very close ties to the author , meant I had to read it. Imagine my surprise, when during a night of sleeplessness I picked the old up and started reading this delightful array of prose. Poetry to me is a personal thing it is the feelings of the author put down for others to see , read and judge. Elise Skidmore has done just that , she has bared not only her soul , but her sense of humor.In written words she reaches, not only into her soul, but opens the readers also. I would venture to say that anyone reading this little book, and it is little, would finish it with sometimes a tear, sometimes a smile, but hungering for more. Kudos To you Elise Skidmore..
This isn't a book for people who don't like to spend time considering "things". Each poem is a perspective, a thinking piece from a woman who has made it a habit to think for long years. Since childhood, certainly. I'm not terribly fond of most poetry because I detest pretentious writing in general and poetry is kneecap deep in pretension. This isn't. Elise Skidmore is anything but pretentious and her thoughts, in each poem, will be worth considering. And it isn't all of one-piece, either. Sometimes wry, sometimes sentimental (nothing wrong with that, if done carefully), funny, tender (and I don't like tender generally, but these I do).
One extraordinary addition to the poems themselves are the photos that are included. Many are stunning. All of them fit exactly where they're placed and highlight the poems.
Definitely recommended. Highly so.
